Martha Elizabeth's poems, in The Return of Pleasure, are vivid, smart and passionate- indeed a pleasure.- William Kitteridge
Return of Pleasure The Martha Elizabeth Books
This collection of poems tends toward the cryptic, with many passages of strange imagery and odd language play that strike chords in the heart but don't necessarily make sense to the head. Here is one such passage, in a poem called "As the Migraine Turns:"No more sunglint edges
no prickle-neck
or scaly clutch through skull, no
off-center bleached chrysanthemum between the eyes
like the afterglow of fireworks.
I really *liked* this imagery, but I only sometimes felt like I understood what Ms. Elizabeth was trying to achieve. I had this feeling throughout this book, that the meanings of stanzas and even entire poems was opaque to me, that I was not getting what the poet had intended for me to receive through her words. This caused me quite some frustration, and for that I docked it a star, though it might be me and not the poems that is dense. Maybe one just has to work a little harder to "get" these poems. Overall I enjoyed the poems in the collection; there are a lot of love poems, and there is an undercurrent of yearning throughout the entire collection that is sometimes shy, sometimes brash, sometimes lascivious. I thought that Ms. Elizabeth did a nice job of illuminating the heart in these poems, and of putting new words to old emotions. A nice job, and looking forward to more.
