Spy Glass is a great ending for the Glass series. Maria V Snyder included all of my favorite characters from the series, including Valek. His character played a huge part in Opal's character growth. While I wasn't very impressed with her character at the very beginning of the book, I really liked her by the end.

With out giving too many spoilers away, at the end of Sea Glass Opal sacrificed her magic in order to save lives. With the start of Spy Glass, she's mourns the loss of her magic as she feels she's lost who she is and her purpose in life. In order to find her identity she decides to go in search of a getting back her magic and a hidden vial with her blood in it. Like everything that has gone on in Opal's life, the journey to find the hidden vial that the Daviian Warpers stole will be far from easy.

I loved that Maria didn't hold back on the cast of great characters who returned to the story like, Yelena, Valek, Ari, Janco, Nic, Eve, Kade, Devlen, and more, including some new characters. There's no shortage of romance. Opal finds herself torn between Devlen and Kade, and the one she choose was no surprise to me. I know some fans couldn't figure out how she could choose the person she did, but to me, it's something Maria hinted at in Sea Glass. I really liked how Opal's choice is played out and explained, as Kade and Opal and also Opal and Devlen figure out what they really want.

I think Maria V Snyder did a great job in wrapping up the Glass series. She stayed true to Opal's character and voice through out the series. There were times I found myself irritated at Opal, as she does make a few not so stellar choices, but that's part of her character's growth. Spy Glass is full of dark twists, magic, romance and is action packed. If you've read the Magic Study Series and the Glass series, I recommend picking up Spy Glass.

There are two things I love about Snyder’s books. How it shows characters overcoming the most horrible of abuses, and coming out of it stronger than ever. First Yelena, and now Opal, show that if you keep fighting, and find those people you can trust in and holding onto them, you can survive whatever the world throws at you. More so, I like that she shows that any who truly seek redemption can find it, one way or another, which is shown in Devlen. I’ve read several reviews that don’t like the relationship that forms between Opal and Devlen, but I understand it. I see it as someone finally getting sober after having done things while in the midst of addiction that no sane person would do, but once sobering up are ashamed of their actions. It was more than just being free of his magic, because Ulrick who went through similar circumstances shows no ability to take responsibility for his own actions. But you can see how Devlen is one of the few who can understand what Opal is going through, and he tries to help her in the way he was trained to be a Story Weaver. While I’m glad that the characters from the Study series continue to be a big part, I also love how Snyder does mainly focus on the new friends and enemies Opal has gained in her own journeys, and ties up the full arc of the story that we’ve been following through this trilogy. I’m just so happy that she continued to write more in this world with the continuance of the Study series, can’t wait to see what happens next.

I loved this series overall because the heroine grows so much over the course of the story. This is really a story about Opal finding herself and it was great to watch it unfold. Opal becomes harder, but not bitter. She becomes smarter and stronger, but never loses her vulnerability. I disagree with the criticisms of her character and suspect they're mostly ship related. I am surprised that anyone liked Kade and Opal together. There are ways to write the "nice guy" compellingly and not make them one dimensional (see Jon Snow from Game of Thrones) and I'm a fan of those male leads, but Snyder didn't attempt that with Kade because she didn't want you too invested in their relationship. If you've read her other series, especially her most popular, she always pairs her heroines with anti-heroes or guys that have an edge. Never the straightforward, one dimensional nice guy. One of her male leads in her other series is an assassin, that literally murders anyone he sees fit for a living (and he's awesome). Yet some of the fans of Snyder's other series have a moral objection to Opal ending with Devlen because he used pressure points to torture her (when he was crazed on blood magic)?...That doesn't make sense to me. Opal did NOT fall for Devlen when he tortured her and held her prisoner. It was only after he redeemed himself (he was actually willing to die for her and for others) that she let herself get involved with him. He didn't change to get into her pants either, Snyder made it clear he truly did it for himself and because he wanted to. He really cared about other people. I think it made sense and it was executed well. It rightfully took Opal a long time to trust Devlen and what happened to her wasn't glossed over. I'm surprised that anyone who hated the idea of Opal forgiving Devlen and believing he had changed would read this book at all since Book 2 (Sea Glass) set this up. Anyways, it was great watching Opal grow in confidence and self esteem and let go of some of her black and white ideals (all of which Devlen helped her immensely with). That's really the best part of this trilogy and really all of Snyder's work I've read so far they're really focused on character journeys, everything else is secondary. The characters drive the story not the plot. I will look for Snyder's new work in the future, I'm a fan.
